I always travel with a pair of socks on the needles — for three reasons: compact, portable and requires little concentration. So as we packed to travel to Northern Ontario and Quebec to visit friends, I checked my sock yarn stash. There at the top of Sock Yarn Bin #2 was a skein of Sweet Georgia Sock Yarn begging to get on the needles. The colorway was Maple — perfect for Fall knitting!
I had planned to knit on the shuttle bus to SEATAC, but it was still too dark outside; so I cast on when we were through security and waiting to board the flight to Toronto. I kept knitting during boarding and take off. I was almost to the end of the cuff when the flight attendant brought my first cup of coffee — with Maple Leaf stirrers! Good theme and color match for my knitting! I knit all day as we traveled to Toronto, went through customs and boarded the second flight to Sudbury.
I knit a bit each day we were in Whitefish, in between hiking and ATV rides around Rick and Estelle’s couple hundred acres of bush. They are avid hunters and fishers who never have to leave their property to catch fish in the river or track game in the bush. Rick said we had a good chance of seeing a moose! Since I’ve only ever seen two in the wild, both along highways in British Colombia, I was stoked!
The leaves were just beginning to turn and the colors were beautiful — a bit like my Maple yarn!
The four of us drove to Belleterre, Quebec, to spend time at the Lapointe cottage on Lac aux Sables for a few days. The weather was cool and rainy — just right for relaxing and hanging out in front of the big window with an awesome view of the lake. With a fire in the stove, pickerel and moose steaks in the frying pans, and great conversation, we had a memorable time!
It was a wonderful lake with awesome sunsets, despite the weather. I spent a lot of time knitting on my socks while enjoying the sunsets! The colors even looked like my Maple socks!
After ten days it was time to leave our dear friends and head home. My socks were almost finished…
… but these were the only moose I saw —
Until we meet again….I can’t promise moose in Washington, but I’ll promise lots of eagles in January, Rick!
GRETCHEN!! Coincidence: I am from Sudbury, Ontario!! Born and raised. I live in Toronto now, but my family still lives up north. Glad you had a good time! 😀

Amazing! I spent every summer of my childhood (and many as an adult) on Lake Nipissing near Verner! Our friends live in Whitefish! They retired from teaching in Sudbury! Small world.
